River Red Gum Scientific: Eucalyptus camaldulensis This Variation: 14 of 20 Habitat: River Red Gums thrive in riverine systems, whether they are adjacent to permanent water sources or seasonal areas. Range: Native to Australia, this species is widespread throughout the continent, especially alongside inland water courses. It has become a popular plantation species globally, but it has also escaped into the wild in many countries, becoming a highly invasive and prolific species. The tree has been unintentionally introduced to North America, Europe, and Asia. Notes: This iconic Australian tree is the most widespread and abundant on the continent, with the ability to grow quickly up to 45m tall. River Red Gums have a habit of shedding large branches (often half the diameter of the trunk) without warning, earning it the nickname 'widow-maker'. This self-pruning process may be an adaptation for water conservation or simply a result of its brittle wood.
