River Red Gum Scientific Name: Eucalyptus camaldulensis This Variation: 6 of 12 Habitat: Riverine systems are dominated by the River Red Gum, whether alongside permanent water sources or seasonal ones. Range: Native to Australia, this tree is widespread throughout the continent, especially beside inland water courses. It's a popular plantation species grown worldwide and has escaped into the wild in many countries, becoming a prolific invasive species. The tree has been unintentionally introduced to North America, Europe, and Asia. Notes: This iconic Australian tree is the most widespread and abundant on the continent. It can quickly grow up to 45m tall. These trees have a habit of dropping large boughs without warning, earning it the nickname 'widow-maker'. This form of self-pruning may be a means of saving water or simply a result of their brittle wood. The tree is often extremely gnarled when growing next to a poor or intermittent water source; it's considerably straighter with constant access to water.
