River Red Gum Scientific: Eucalyptus camaldulensis This Variation: 3 of 12 Habitat: This tree thrives in riverine systems, often found alongside permanent water sources or seasonal ones. Range: Native to Australia, it has become a popular plantation species globally. However, it has escaped into the wild, becoming an invasive species in many countries. Introduced unintentionally to North America, Europe and Asia, its widespread distribution is a testament to its adaptability. Notes: As an iconic Australian tree, River Red Gum is the most widespread and abundant on the continent. Reaching heights of up to 45m quickly, these trees are known for dropping large branches without warning, earning them the nickname 'widow-maker'. This self-pruning habit may be a water-saving mechanism or simply a result of its brittle wood. When growing near poor or intermittent water sources, River Red Gum becomes extremely gnarled; it remains straight when access to constant water is available.
