Ovate Sigillaria Scientific: Sigillaria mammillaris This Variation: 10 of 12 Habitat: Extinct tree-sized lycopsids from the late Carboniferous to the early Permian Period (about 380 to 255 million years ago). It prefers the mineral soils of river floodplains, which may have allowed it to survive the drying of great coal swamps that led to the extinction of many tree-sized lycopsids during the middle Pennsylvanian Epoch (318 to 299 million years ago). Range: Fossils have been found in Great Britain, United States, Canada, parts of Asia and Africa. Notes: Sigillaria has a single trunk that often branches into a characteristic Y-shape. Older plants may branch further. The trunk lacks wood or has a very slender layer only. Support comes from a layer of closely packed leaf bases just below the surface of the trunk, while the center is filled with pith. The trunk is probably green due to photosynthetic tissue on its surface. Long, thin leaves grow in a spiral along the trunk but persist near its growing tip; lower portions show characteristic polygonal leaf scars.
