Ovate Sigillaria\n\nScientific: Sigillaria mammillaris\n\nThis Variation: 8 of 12\n\nHabitat: Extinct tree-sized lycopsids from the late Carboniferous to the early Permian Period (about 380 to 255 million years ago). They thrived in mineral-rich soils of river floodplains, where better drainage allowed them to survive the coal swamps' drying that led to many tree-sized lycopsids' extinction during the Pennsylvanian Epoch (318 to 299 million years ago).\n\nRange: Fossils have been found in Great Britain, United States, Canada, parts of Asia and Africa.\n\nNotes: Sigillaria had a single trunk with a characteristic Y-shape that branched out in older plants. Very old plants may further branch out. The trunk lacked wood or had a very thin layer only. Support came from tightly packed leaf bases just below the surface, while the center was filled with pith. Photosynthetic tissue on its surface made it likely green.
