Name: Ovate Sigillaria Scientific: Sigillaria mammillaris This Variation: 6 of 12 Habitat: Extinct tree-sized lycopsids that once thrived in the late Carboniferous to early Permian Period (about 380-255 million years ago) on river floodplains with mineral soils. Their preference for well-drained soils may have allowed them to survive the drying of great coal swamps, which led to the extinction of many tree-sized lycopsids during the middle Pennsylvanian Epoch (318-299 million years ago). Range: Fossils of Sigillaria have been found in Great Britain, United States, Canada, parts of Asia, and Africa. Notes: Sigillaria had a single trunk that often branched into a distinctive Y-shape as it aged. The trunk lacked wood or had only a thin layer, while support came from closely packed leaf bases just below the surface. Photosynthetic tissue on the trunk's surface made it likely green. Long, thin leaves grew in a spiral pattern along the trunk but persisted mainly near its growing tip; lower portions showed characteristic polygonal leaf scars.
