Name: Ovate Sigillaria Scientific: Sigillaria mammillaris This Variation: 5 of 12 Habitat: Extinct tree-sized lycopsids from the late Carboniferous to the early Permian Period (about 380 to 255 million years ago). It seems that these ancient trees had a strong preference for well-drained mineral soils in river floodplains. This adaptability may have helped them survive the drying of the great coal swamps that led to the extinction of many tree-sized lycopsids during the middle Pennsylvanian Epoch (318 to 299 million years ago). Range: Fossils of Sigillaria have been found in Great Britain, United States, Canada, parts of Asia and Africa. Notes: This ancient tree had a single trunk that often branched into a distinctive Y-shape as it grew older. Older plants may branch further. The trunk lacked wood or had only a very thin layer of it. Support came from a dense layer of leaf bases just below the surface of the trunk, while the center was filled with pith. The trunk likely had photosynthetic tissue on its surface, making it probably green in color. Long, thin leaves grew spirally along the trunk but persisted only near its growing tip; lower portions of the plant showed characteristic polygonal leaf scars where the leaves had fallen off.
