It prefers well-drained, slightly acidic volcanic soil but can tolerate almost any well-drained soil type. Range: Native to central and southern Chile, as well as western Argentina. Its distinctive appearance has made it a favorite among botanical gardens and collectors, resulting in its propagation across most parts of the world. Notes: This evergreen tree grows up to 40m tall. It's often described as a living fossil, having first appeared 200 million years ago during the age of dinosaurs. The monkey puzzle tree is the national tree of Chile. The origin of the English language name "monkey puzzle" dates back to around 1850 when Charles Austin remarked, "It would puzzle a monkey to climb that."
