Monkey Puzzle Tree Scientific Name: Araucaria araucana Variation: This is one of twelve models available. Habitat: Natively found on the lower slopes of the Andes, typically above 1,000 meters. It thrives in well-drained soil with a slightly acidic pH, but can tolerate almost any type of well-drained soil. Range: Native to central and southern Chile, as well as western Argentina. Its unique appearance has made it a favorite among botanical gardens and collectors, leading to its widespread propagation around the world. Notes: This evergreen tree can grow up to 40 meters tall. Often described as a living fossil, it first appeared 200 million years ago during the age of dinosaurs. It is the national tree of Chile. The English name "monkey puzzle" originated in the mid-19th century when Charles Austin remarked that it would puzzle a monkey to climb this tree. As the species had no popular name at the time, "monkey puzzler" and eventually "monkey puzzle" stuck. As an immature tree, it is generally conical in shape, while mature trees develop their distinctive umbrella shape. Included in This Package: A total of twelve models are available.
