It thrives in well-drained, slightly acidic, volcanic soil but tolerates most well-drained soil types. Notes: Evergreen tree reaching 40 meters tall. Often described as a living fossil, having first appeared 200 million years ago during the age of dinosaurs. It is the national tree of Chile. The popular English name monkey puzzle originated from around 1850 when Charles Austin remarked that it would puzzle a monkey to climb this tree.
