Name: Monkey Puzzle Tree Scientific: Araucaria araucana This Variation: 8 of 12 Habitat: Native to the lower slopes of the Andes, typically above 1,000 meters. It thrives in well-drained, slightly acidic, volcanic soil, but can tolerate almost any type of well-drained soil. Range: Found natively in central and southern Chile and western Argentina. Its distinctive appearance has made it a favorite among botanical gardens and collectors, leading to its propagation worldwide. Notes: Evergreen tree growing up to 40 meters tall. Often described as a living fossil, having first appeared 200 million years ago during the age of dinosaurs. It is the national tree of Chile. The origin of the popular English language name "monkey puzzle" dates back to about 1850, when Charles Austin, a noted barrister, remarked that it would puzzle a monkey to climb it. As the species had no existing popular name, "monkey puzzler" and later "monkey puzzle" stuck. Immature trees are generally conical in shape, while mature trees develop their distinctive umbrella shape.
