Monkey Puzzle Tree Scientific: Araucaria araucana This Variation: 6 of 12 Habitat: Native to the lower slopes of the Andes, typically above 1,000m, where it thrives in well-drained, slightly acidic volcanic soil. Range: Found in central and southern Chile and western Argentina, its distinctive look has made it a favourite among botanical gardens and collectors, propogated worldwide. Notes: A fast-growing evergreen tree reaching 40m tall, often described as a living fossil having first appeared 200 Million years ago. It is the national tree of Chile. The origin of the popular English name "monkey puzzle" dates back to about 1850 when Charles Austin remarked that it would puzzle a monkey to climb this tree. As an immature tree, it has a conical shape and later develops its distinctive umbrella shape. Included in this Package: 12 models in total Standard -- 106,537 polygons -- 36.53m tall.
