Monkey Puzzle Tree Scientific: Araucaria araucana This Variation: 5 of 12 Habitat: The Monkey Puzzle Tree's native habitat is the lower slopes of the Andes, typically above 1,000m. It prefers well-drained, slightly acidic, volcanic soil, but will tolerate almost any well-drained soil type. Range: Native to central and southern Chile and western Argentina. Its distinctive look has made it a favorite among botanical gardens and collectors, and hence it's been propagated to most parts of the world. Notes: The Monkey Puzzle Tree is an evergreen tree growing to 40m tall. It is often described as a living fossil, having first appeared 200 Million years ago, in the age of Dinosaurs. It is the national tree of Chile. The origin of the popular English language name "monkey puzzle" derives from about 1850, when the noted barrister Charles Austin remarked, "It would puzzle a monkey to climb that." As the species had no existing popular name, first "monkey puzzler," then "monkey puzzle" stuck. As an immature tree it is generally conical shaped, and later, as it matures, it develops its distinctive umbrella shape.
