Name: Giant Redwood LowPoly Scientific: Sequoiadendron gigantum This Variation: LowPoly 12 of 12. A HighPoly version of this plant is also available. Habitat: The Giant Redwood thrives in humid climates with dry summers and snowy winters, typically found on granitic-based residual and alluvial soils at elevations ranging from 1,400-2,150m. Range: This tree occurs naturally only on the western slopes of the Sierra Nevada Mountains in California, but it's cultivated worldwide and notable groves can be found in France, UK, Italy, Northern Europe, Australia, and New Zealand. Notes: The Giant Redwood is Earth's largest tree species, despite not being as tall as the Coastal Redwood (Sequia sempervirens), its wider girth and less tapered trunk make it greater by volume. This long-lived species boasts an oldest known age of 3,200+ years, while today it's limited to a small area in California, though once more widely distributed in prehistoric times. Fossil specimens have been discovered in Cretaceous era sediments across North America, Europe, New Zealand, and Australia.
