Name: Giant Redwood LowPoly Scientific: Sequoiadendron gigantum This Variation: LowPoly 11 of 12. A HighPoly version of this plant is also available. Habitat: The Giant Redwood grows in a humid climate with dry summers and snowy winters, typically on granitic-based residual and alluvial soils at elevations between 1,400 and 2,150 meters. Range: This tree naturally occurs only on the western slopes of the Sierra Nevada Mountains in California, but it is cultivated worldwide, with notable groves found in France, the UK, Italy, Northern Europe, Australia, and New Zealand. Notes: The Giant Redwood is Earth's largest trees, despite not being as tall as Coastal Redwoods. They have a wider girth and less tapered trunks, making them larger by volume. This species can live for 3,200+ years, with the oldest known tree dating back that far. Although its current distribution is limited to California, it was once more widely distributed in prehistoric times, before being reduced by the last ice age. Fossil specimens have been found in Cretaceous era sediments from various North American and European sites, as well as New Zealand and Australia.
