Giant Redwood LowPoly Scientific: Sequoiadendron gigantum This Variation: LowPoly 10 of 12. A HighPoly version of this plant is also available. Habitat: Typically found in humid climates characterized by dry summers and snowy winters, the Giant Redwood thrives on granitic-based residual and alluvial soils at elevations ranging from 1,400 to 2,150 meters. Range: This tree occurs naturally only on the western slopes of the Sierra Nevada Mountains in California, but it is cultivated worldwide, with notable groves found in France, the UK, Italy, Northern Europe, Australia, and New Zealand. Notes: The Giant Redwood is Earth's largest tree species, with a wider girth and less tapered trunk than the Coastal Redwood. This long-lived species can live for 3,200+ years, with its oldest known individual being over 3,200 years old. Although its present-day distribution is limited to a small area in California, it was once widely distributed in North America and Eurasian coniferous forests before being reduced by the last ice age. Older fossil specimens have been found in Cretaceous era sediments from various sites in North America, Europe, New Zealand, and Australia.
