Name: Giant Redwood LowPoly Scientific: Sequoiadendron giganteum This Variation: LowPoly 8 of 12. A HighPoly version of this plant is also available. Habitat: Typically found in humid climates with dry summers and snowy winters, the Giant Redwood thrives on granitic-based residual and alluvial soils at elevations ranging from 1,400â2,150m. Range: This tree naturally occurs only on the western slopes of the Sierra Nevada Mountains in California, but it is cultivated worldwide. Notable groves can be found in France, UK, Italy, Northern Europe, Australia, and New Zealand. Notes: The Giant Redwood is Earth's largest tree by volume, despite not reaching the height of its Coastal Redwood counterpart (Sequoia sempervirens). Its trunk is wider and less tapered, making it more massive. This long-lived species has been known to live up to 3,200+ years. Although currently limited to a small area in California, its range once spanned North America and Eurasian coniferous forests before being reduced by the last ice age. Fossil specimens have been discovered in Cretaceous era sediments across several sites in North America and Europe, as well as New Zealand and Australia.
