Habitat: Giant Redwoods thrive in humid climates characterized by dry summers and snowy winters, typically found on granitic-based residual and alluvial soils with elevations ranging from 1,400-2,150m. Range: This tree occurs naturally only on the western slopes of the Sierra Nevada Mountains of California, but it is cultivated worldwide. Notable groves can be found in France, UK, Italy, Northern Europe, Australia, and New Zealand. Notes: Giant Redwoods are the largest trees on Earth, with a wider girth and less tapered trunking than Coastal Redwoods. They live for thousands of years, with the oldest known tree being over 3,200 years old. Although their present-day distribution is limited to California, they were once more widely distributed in prehistoric times.
