Name: Giant Redwood LowPoly Scientific: Sequoiadendron gigantum This Variation: LowPoly 5 of 12. A HighPoly version of this plant is also available. Habitat: Typically found in humid climates characterized by dry summers and snowy winters, the Giant Redwood thrives on granitic-based residual and alluvial soils with elevations ranging from 1,400 to 2,150m. Range: This tree occurs naturally only on the western slopes of the Sierra Nevada Mountains of California, but is cultivated worldwide, with notable groves found in France, the UK, Italy, Northern Europe, Australia, and New Zealand. Notes: As the largest trees on Earth, Giant Redwoods are not as tall as Coastal Redwoods, but have a wider girth and less tapered trunks, making them greater by volume. They are long-lived species, with the oldest known tree being 3,200+ years old. Although their present-day distribution is limited to a small area of California, they were once more widely distributed in prehistoric times and were common in North American and Eurasian coniferous forests until their range was reduced by the last ice age. Older fossil specimens have been found in Cretaceous era sediments from various sites in North America and Europe, as well as New Zealand and Australia.
