Habitat: The Giant Redwood grows in a humid climate with dry summers and snowy winters, typically found on granitic-based residual and alluvial soils at elevations ranging from 1,400 to 2,150 meters. Range: This tree naturally occurs only on the western slopes of the Sierra Nevada Mountains in California, but is cultivated worldwide, with notable groves found in France, the UK, Italy, Northern Europe, Australia, and New Zealand. Notes: The Giant Redwood is the largest tree species on Earth, although not as tall as the Coastal Redwood, it has a wider girth and less tapered trunking, making it greater by volume. This long-lived species can live for over 3,200 years, with older fossil specimens found in Cretaceous era sediments across North America, Europe, New Zealand, and Australia.
