Name: Giant Redwood Scientific: Sequoiadendron gigantum About This Package: This package contains an extensive series of staged models representing the entire lifecycle of a single plant species. The collection includes models for maturity and health stages, with a total of 24 detailed representations. These same species can also be found in separate variations containing a subset of these staging models; look for them in the EVERYPlant store. The exact plant variation included in this extended package is unique and cannot be found in any other packages. Habitat: The Giant Redwood typically thrives in humid climates characterized by dry summers and snowy winters. Most groves are situated on granitic-based residual and alluvial soils with elevations generally ranging from 1,400-2,150m. Range: This tree occurs naturally only in the western slopes of the Sierra Nevada Mountains of California, however, it is cultivated worldwide, with notable groves found in France, UK, Italy, Northern Europe, Australia, and New Zealand. Notes: These trees are the largest on Earth, though not as tall as the Coastal Redwood (Sequia sempervirens), they have a wider girth and less tapered trunking making them greater by volume. This species is long-lived, with the oldest known being 3,200+ years old. Although the present-day distribution of this species is limited to a small area of California, it was once more widely distributed in prehistoric times, and was a common species in North American and Eurasian coniferous forests until its range was reduced by the last ice age. Older fossil specimens have been found in Cretaceous era sediments from various sites in North America and Europe, as well as New Zealand and Australia.
