Common Horsetail Scientific: Equisetum arvense This Variation: 1 of 12 Habitat: Common horsetails thrive in a wide range of conditions, often found in damp and open woodlands, pastures, arable lands, roadsides, disturbed areas, and near the edge of streams. Range: Native to the arctic and temperate regions of the northern hemisphere, common horsetails grow well into the arctic circle in North America and as far south as Texas. They are also found in Norway, Sweden, Finland, Russia, India, and Iran, and occur in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Madagascar, Indonesia, Australia, and New Zealand. Notes: The common horsetail is an herbaceous perennial plant with separate sterile, non-reproductive and fertile, spore-bearing stems growing from a perennial underground system. Fertile stems emerge early in spring and are non-photosynthetic, while green sterile stems start to grow after the fertile stems have wilted and persist through summer until autumn frosts. The plant's extensive rhizomes and deeply buried tubers make it difficult to control. Fire, mowing, or slashing is ineffective at removing the plant as new stems quickly grow from the rhizomes.
