Habitat: Growing in coastal mountainous regions within its range, this tree thrives where ocean moisture brings precipitation that waters it year-round. Tallest and oldest trees are found in deep valleys and gullies with steady streams flowing through them and regular fog drip. Range: Occupying a narrow strip of land approximately 750 km long along the Pacific coast of North America, its most southerly grove is in Monterey County, California, while its most northerly groves are in extreme southwestern Oregon. Notes: An evergreen tree with an impressive lifespan (1,800+ years) and exceptional growth, reaching heights exceeding 115 meters. These trees hold the record for being the tallest living things on Earth, surpassing even the Giant Redwood. Fossil records indicate that it was once more widely distributed.
