Habitat: This tree thrives in coastal mountainous regions where ocean moisture nourishes it, with the tallest and oldest trees found in deep valleys and gullies where year-round streams flow and fog drip is a regular occurrence. Range: This tree dominates a narrow strip of land approximately 750 km long along the Pacific coast of North America; its southernmost grove is in Monterey County, California, while its northernmost groves are in extreme southwestern Oregon. Notes: A long-lived (1,800+ years) evergreen tree, it is the tallest living tree on Earth, reaching over 115m tall, surpassing even the Giant Redwood. These trees are also among the oldest living things and are one of the most valuable species in the lumber industry. Fossil records show that it was once much more extensively distributed. A very old tree, larger than normal, considerably gnarled, and with heavier, drooping branches. Young Mature -- 8,967 polygons -- 70.91m tall. Fully mature but not at its full height yet. Young -- 5,793 polygons -- 44.42m tall. Smaller plant some halfway through its maturing cycle. Immature -- 1,460 polygons -- 14.01m tall. Plant is small and hasn't reached its mature aspect.
