The tallest and oldest trees inhabit deep valleys and gullies where year-round streams flow, and regular fog drip provides sustenance. Range: This tree occupies a narrow strip of land approximately 750 km in length along the Pacific coast of North America; the most southerly grove is found in Monterey County, California, while the most northerly groves thrive in extreme southwestern Oregon. Notes: An evergreen, long-lived (1,800+ years) tree that stands as the tallest living tree on Earth, reaching up to 115.5 meters tall. Among the oldest living things, these trees are highly valued in the lumber industry due to their exceptional durability and strength. Fossil records show a time when this species was much more widely distributed across different regions.
