Coastal Redwood Scientific: Sequoia sempervirens This Variation: 19 of 20 Habitat: Found thriving in coastal mountainous regions where incoming moisture from the ocean provides ample water supply. The tallest and oldest trees flourish in deep valleys and gullies, where year-round streams flow freely and regular fog drip maintains a consistent level of moisture. Range: Spanning approximately 750 km along the Pacific coast of North America, this tree is confined to a narrow strip of land; the most southerly grove is located in Monterey County, California, while the most northerly groves can be found in extreme southwestern Oregon. Notes: A long-lived evergreen (1,800+ years), it is also the tallest living tree on Earth, reaching heights of up to 115.5 m. Among its remarkable qualities are its exceptional longevity and its status as one of the oldest living things known to man. The lumber industry considers it a highly valuable species due to its desirable properties. Fossil records show that it was once much more widespread.
