Coastal Redwood Scientific Name: Sequoia sempervirens This Variant: 16 of 20 Habitat: Within its native range, this majestic tree grows abundantly in coastal mountainous regions where incoming ocean moisture supplies ample precipitation. The tallest and oldest specimens thrive in deep valleys and gullies, where year-round streams flow freely and fog drip is a regular occurrence. Range: This tree dominates a narrow strip of land approximately 750 km long along the Pacific coast of North America; the most southerly grove can be found in Monterey County, California, while the most northerly stands are located in extreme southwestern Oregon. Notes: A hardy evergreen tree known for its remarkable longevity, living well over 1,800 years. The Coastal Redwood is the tallest living tree on Earth, reaching heights of up to 115.5 meters. These ancient giants are also among the oldest living things. As a highly valuable species in the lumber industry, it plays a vital role. Fossil records indicate that its once-extensive distribution has been significantly reduced.
