The tallest and oldest trees thrive in deep valleys and gullies where year-round streams flow freely and fog drip is a regular occurrence. Range: Along the Pacific coast of North America, this tree occupies a narrow strip of land approximately 750 km long; the southernmost grove is found in Monterey County, California, and the northernmost groves are located in extreme southwestern Oregon. Notes: An evergreen species that can live for over 1,800 years. It is Earth's tallest living tree, reaching heights up to 115.5 m. These trees also hold the record as among the oldest living things. Highly valuable in the lumber industry, fossil records show it was once more extensively distributed.
