Coastal Redwood Scientific: Sequoia sempervirens This Variation: 7 of 20 Habitat: In its native range, Coastal Redwoods thrive in mountainous coastal regions where ocean moisture precipitates and provides adequate water supply. The tallest and oldest specimens are often found in deep valleys and gullies, where streams flow year-round and fog drip is consistent. Range: This iconic tree species occupies a narrow strip of approximately 750 km along the Pacific coast of North America; the most southerly grove is located in Monterey County, California, while the most northerly groves are situated in extreme southwestern Oregon. Notes: A resilient and long-lived evergreen tree, Coastal Redwoods can live for over 1,800 years and reach heights of up to 115.5 m. These towering trees are also among the oldest living things on Earth. Valued for its timber, it is one of the most valuable species in the lumber industry. Fossil records show that this tree was once more widely distributed.
