Coastal Redwood Scientific Name: Sequoia sempervirens Variation 2 of 20 The Coastal Redwood thrives in coastal mountainous regions within its range, where ocean moisture brings essential water and precipitation. Tallest and oldest trees are often found in deep valleys and gullies, where year-round streams flow smoothly, and regular fog drip keeps them hydrated. Its range spans a narrow strip of land approximately 750 km in length along the Pacific coast of North America; the southernmost grove is located in Monterey County, California, while the northernmost groves can be found in extreme southwestern Oregon. A remarkable evergreen, the Coastal Redwood boasts an incredibly long lifespan of over 1,800 years. Reaching heights of up to 115.5 meters, it is the tallest living tree on Earth, and among the oldest living things on record. This species holds significant value in the lumber industry. Fossil records show that its distribution was once much more extensive.
