These destroyer escorts were originally designed to counter Germany's U-boats used for attacking supply convoys traveling from western nations to England, which aimed at supplying them with food, weapons, and ammunition to fight their wars. A total of 105 ships made up the Evarts class; eight were cancelled during construction while thirty-two were delivered to the British Royal Navy under lend-lease arrangements. The British then reclassified these ships as Frigates and gave them new names based on famous captains from the Napoleonic Wars, establishing what came to be known as the Captain Class.
