An evaporative cooler, or swamp cooler, lowers temperature via water evaporation. This contrasts with traditional air conditioning systems where energy is removed from the air. Evaporative cooling operates by circulating water from a reservoir to a moistening pad through a pump. As outside air passes through the saturated pad, it's cooled by evaporation.
