During the Ottoman era, one of the most important tools for maintaining personal space was doors. When five homes were located within the same courtyard, they would find a solution by striking two knocks on the doors. In this way, if the right knock was struck, it meant a man had arrived, while a left knock indicated a woman had come to visit. Mardin's unique sense of humor likely originated from this practice.
