Euterpe

Euterpe

myminifactory

This sculpture represents Euterpe, one of the Muses, daughters of Mnemosyne, fathered by Zeus. In Greek mythology, she's known as the "Giver of Delight", and when poets later assigned roles to each Muse, music became hers. During late Classical times, she was named muse of lyric poetry and depicted holding a flute. Some claim she invented the double-flute or aulos, but most mythographers credit Marsyas with its creation. Pindar and other sources describe Rhesus, the Thracian king from the Iliad, as Euterpe's son with Strymon, the river-god; Homer calls him son of Eioneus. This is a cast of a Roman marble copy, now in Rome, Vatican City.
