Regular rails for Eurorack Modular Synthesizers can be challenging to obtain, cumbersome, and prohibitively expensive. To help beginners minimize costs and barriers to entry, I designed these 3D printed supports for wooden rails to be used with lasercut (and/or other) cases. For decades, modular synth cases were made with wooden rails permanently attached, but after years of moving modules around, the wood would typically strip and deteriorate. For this reason, I designed them so the wooden strips can be swapped out with new ones if needed. The files include an .skp (SketchUp) file for modifying the design, a single-piece .stl file, and a 12-piece .upp file for use with 3D printers. It's best to use a reasonably hard wood like oak. Pine splits too easily, so it's not recommended. Before screwing in the screws for the first time, I recommend predrilling a small pilot hole to limit splitting. The oak dimensions are 9mm x 9mm x the length of your case. A picture shows information about the oak I use here in Australia from the hardware store Bunnings. The bolt that goes through the case and into the support is M5 and secures to an encapsulating nut in the support. A picture demonstrates how to place the nut in the support - nut point angled into the supports thick base plate, then press down with your finger to lock the other side of the nut in. The picture shows the product I use from Bunnings. The nut you use may be a slightly different size. If it's too small, a little bit of glue should hold it in place. If the nut is too large, you'll need to adjust the .skp or .stl file. Sometimes, the bolt doesn't go through to the nut straight and locks the thread. This can be caused by the 5mm hole in the support (file it out a little) or the bolt itself isn't straight (unscrew and try again at a straighter angle). This design is offered free for personal use only. A lot of my time has been invested in producing it, and I hope you enjoy using it. I'd love to see your pictures and remixes posted here.
