The European larch, scientifically known as Larix decidua, is a native species found in the mountains of central Europe such as the Alps and Carpathian Mountains. It also has disjunct lowland populations in northern Poland and southern Lithuania. These larches have a life span ranging from 100 to 350 years, with a reliable average of about 200 years. Interestingly, one of the larches planted by the second Duke of Atholl at Dunkeld in 1738 is still standing today.
