This is a highly detailed model of the Eurofighter Typhoon (EFA), Italian Version. The model itself is incredibly lightweight, boasting only 15,400 faces without armament, allowing for seamless animation of even more complex scenery geometry or additional models simultaneously, and significantly increasing render speed. All major components are fully animate-able. Armament includes: AIM-9X Sidewinder in medium detail, Brimstone Anti-Tank Guided Missile with high-level detail, Triplet sub-harness, and Center Tank. For a more comprehensive collection of weapons and textures, please see my EFA collection. Textures: Color, Specular, and Bump maps are provided for easy modification or customizing. Photoshop templates are also included for effortless re-designation or re-marking. History: In the mid-1970s, France, Germany, and the UK formed a collaborative effort known as the European Combat Aircraft programme (ECA). Following differing requirements, particularly the French demand for carrier compatibility, British Aerospace (BAe) and Messerschmitt-Blkow-Blohm proposed the European Combat Fighter (ECF). The development of separate national prototypes and continued disagreements over specifications ultimately led to the cancellation of the ECF programme in 1981. As a result, the Panavia partners (Germany, Italy, and UK) initiated the Agile Combat Aircraft (ACA) programme. Following Germany and Italy's inability to fund development, the UK MoD contributed 80 million to BAe for the creation of the European Aircraft Programme demonstrator (EAP). In 1983, the UK, France, Germany, Italy, and Spain launched the Future European Fighter Aircraft (F/EFA) programme, which was designed to possess Short Take Off and Landing (STOL) and Beyond Visual Range (BVR) capabilities. In 1984, France reiterated its demand for a carrier-capable version and insisted on taking a leading role. The UK, Germany, and Italy chose not to participate and established the new EFA programme. The following year, France officially withdrew from the project to pursue its own ACX project, which would eventually become the Dassault Rafale. Also in 1985, the BAe EAP was unveiled at BAe Warton, with funding now also provided by MBB and BAe itself. The EAP made its maiden flight in August 1986. The Eurofighter bears a strong resemblance to the EAP. Design work continued over the next five years using data from the EAP. Initial requirements were: UK 250 aircraft, Germany 250, Italy 165, and Spain 100. Production was divided among countries according to their projected procurement - British Aerospace (33%), Daimler-Benz (33%), Aeritalia (21%), and Construcciones Aeronuticas SA (CASA) (13%). 1986 saw the establishment of Eurofighter Jagdflugzeug GmbH in Munich, responsible for managing development, as well as EuroJet Turbo GmbH, an alliance between Rolls-Royce, MTU Aero Engines, FiatAvio (now Avio), and ITP for EJ200 development. The maiden flight of the Eurofighter prototype took place on March 27, 1994, then known simply as the Eurofighter EF 2000. Messerschmitt-Blkow-Blohm chief test pilot Peter Weger piloted the prototype on a test flight around Bavaria. The 1990s saw significant debates over work share, specifications, and even participation in the project. When the final production contract was signed in 1997, revised procurement totals were as follows: UK 232, Germany 180, Italy 121, and Spain 87. Production was again divided according to procurement: British Aerospace (37%), DASA (29%), Aeritalia (19.5%), and CASA (14%). The project has undergone several name changes since its inception, having been known as EFA (European Fighter Aircraft), Eurofighter, EF2000 (Eurofighter 2000), and most recently Typhoon.
