Euripides (/juːˈrɪpɪdiːz/ or /jɔːˈrɪpɪdiːz/) was a renowned tragedian of classical Athens, whose works have stood the test of time. Alongside Aeschylus and Sophocles, he is one of three ancient Greek tragedians whose numerous plays continue to captivate audiences today. Historians estimate that up to 95 plays were attributed to him by some ancient scholars, although the Suda suggests a more modest figure of 92. Among these, approximately 18 or 19 have survived largely intact, with fragments of most others remaining for analysis. In contrast, fewer complete plays have been preserved from Aeschylus and Sophocles combined, partly due to Euripides' increasing popularity during the Hellenistic Age. He became an integral part of ancient literary education, alongside Homer, Demosthenes, and Menander, whose works continue to inspire generations.
