Euripides (/yüːrɪpɪdiːz/ or /jɔːrɪpɪdiːz/) was a renowned tragedian of classical Athens. Along with Aeschylus and Sophocles, he stands out as one of the three ancient Greek tragedians whose plays have been preserved for posterity. Some ancient scholars credited him with writing 95 plays but according to the Suda it was at most 92. Of these, 18 or 19 remain relatively intact (there has been ongoing debate about his authorship of Rhesus, largely based on stylistic grounds) and significant fragments exist for most of the other plays. More of his works have survived in their entirety than those of Aeschylus and Sophocles combined, partly because his popularity soared as theirs declined—he became a cornerstone of ancient literary education in the Hellenistic Age, along with Homer, Demosthenes and Menander.
