Eternal Springtime at The Musée Rodin, Paris

Eternal Springtime was created during Rodin's most intense period of activity for The Gates of Hell, but this elegant two-figure work never appeared on the portal: just like The Kiss, of which it is a sort of variation, its subject evokes the happiness of two young lovers, a euphoria that clashes with the tragedy being played out on The Gates. With its rhythmic movement reminiscent of 18th-century decorative sculpture, which Rodin admired and often imitated when working for ornamentalists, Eternal Springtime was extremely successful and was translated several times into bronze and marble. The female figure in this group is based on Torso of Adèle, an earlier work created by Rodin that was used on the tympanum of The Gates of Hell. Through its sensuality, this straining body with arched back fits perfectly into the composition. In response to this ascending curve, the broad movement of the man dominates this pair of lovers.
