This is my second entry to the Esso competition. In this design, I am upcycling the aluminum can. It seemed fitting to create something that embodies upcycling to make functional, usable, and beautiful art. What better way to reduce, re-use, and recycle discarded cans into a glamorous piece of furniture, in this case, a bespoke chandelier-style pendant? I found no better inspiration than the work birds do when creating their nests, often sadly using rubbish and materials (mainly plastics) found in their plight to provide shelter and security to their families. So in a perfect world, I would collect plastic from rubbish and convert it to filament, then collect discarded cans and create this piece called 'ESSO es luz' (in Spanish meaning 'This is light') and in a very small way, I would have helped the very animal that gave me the inspiration to create this piece. Hugo Riveros I have utilized 24 individual aluminum cans to create the pendant light. It's a working progress as I am printing all the pieces one by one. Its a lamp that uses the cans. ESSO ES LUZ (that is light in Spanish) I will be posting and updating my Instagram (hugoarchicad) daily with my progress and hope to have it done in time so I can take photos of the finish product. It consists of a pendant made of 12 components, each component holds two lights in a can. Once you have all 12 pieces (on my CR-10's am printing each in about 34 hours each), Tested last night to see if I had the holes at the correct spacing in relation to the light string and they work a treat. I won't know how it will turn out until I have it all put together. So, at this rate, I will be finishing printing all my components in another six days give or take (roughly 31st of January). Its the third of February and I have begun to glue all the pieces now. I was hoping to paint today also but its raining outside so maybe tomorrow if all goes well. Its all coming together well which is a great relief! Will have to go buy 250mm cans later so I can cut them, paint them, and fit them. Am so close am loving the time I have had doing this competition entry. I started with one idea then I began to add things to it and realised that all that stuff I had added had cluttered the whole design. So I have gone back to my original idea. So this took 447 hours to print. The bill of materials: 2.5 rolls of 1 kilo PLA 24 battery-operated candles 24 cans (do not buy 24 cans of V or red bull and drink them to make this, that's too much and can make you end up in hospital, look for empty ones) One can of paint A bit of fishing line Double-sided tape
