To dispose of used espresso grinds inexpensively, create a knockbox using household items. Acquire an empty coffee can, a 5" long stainless steel screw and matching nut, and a flexi-straw. Utilize scissors to cut the straw to fit over the screw. Drill holes near the top of the coffee can, slide the screw through its side covering the threads with the straw, then attach the nut. Knock out your portafilter's espresso into the can. Note that this DIY version lacks shock absorption which might damage your equipment. For safety reasons, use a stainless steel screw and ensure the flexi-straw is food-safe; replace it if cracked. This homemade knockbox method comes at a significantly lower cost than store-bought alternatives starting at $30 each. However, personal outcomes may vary. As a reminder, this DIY solution's food safety isn't guaranteed.
