What does your name mean? Spinosaurus means "thorn lizard." • When and who discovered it? This genus was first known through the fossil remains found in Egypt in the 1910s and described by German paleontologist Ernst Stromer. • What size did it have and how was it? It had a length of 12.6 to 18 meters and weighed between 7 and 9 tons. Spinosaurus's distinctive spines, which were extensions of vertebral apophyses, grew up to 1.65 m in height and were probably connected with skin, forming a structure similar to a sail. • How long ago did it live? It lived approximately 112 to 93.5 million years ago, from the Lower Albian to the Lower Cenomanian of the Cretaceous period. • What did it eat? It is believed that it might have fed on fish; evidence suggests that it had multiple functions, including thermoregulation and display.
