In early June, a massive dust storm severed contact with NASA's Opportunity rover due to blocked sunlight from solar panels and drained batteries. The rover is likely experiencing a low-power fault, forcing it into hibernation mode. The storm was part of a series that shrouded most of Mars in dust, but started dissipating by late August. Since then, NASA's antennas have repeatedly pointed towards the rover, waiting for a response from Opportunity. Are you concerned about the rover's fate? Want to be among the first to know if Opportunity is operational again? This project may interest you! Using an ESP32 microcontroller, we establish real-time connections with NASA's Deep Space Network (DSN) to check for communication attempts with Opportunity. The clock displays current time, mission completion time, and probe information received at that moment. If any DSN antennas are pointed towards the rover, a reverse sinusoidal scroll animation is displayed. When no antennas are actively listening, photos from the mission are shown. Upon receiving a signal from Opportunity, an alarm sounds, playing an MP3 stored on the SDCARD to announce the good news. Pictures Credit: NASA/JPL and Oppy render Sean Doran
