Esmeralda, a molding fashioned after a sculpture created by Edouard-Charles-Marie Houssin circa 1885. Born in Douai on September 13, 1847, he joined the Academic Schools of Douai in 1856 and quickly received several awards for his outstanding work. In 1864, he moved to Paris to study under the guidance of Henri Lemaire of Valenciennes and François Jouffroy of Dijon. His talent was soon recognized as he was admitted to the sculpture section of the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1866. That same year, Houssin showcased his first bust at the Society of Friends of the Arts of Douai, earning widespread acclaim for his skill. From 1871 to 1877, he served as a professor of sculpture at the Douai Art Schools, where he honed his craft and inspired future generations. Returning to Paris in 1878, Houssin continued to exhibit his works regularly at the Salon, receiving numerous awards and accolades for his exceptional talent. Many of his pieces were purchased by the state, and he received numerous public commissions, cementing his reputation as a master sculptor. In early 1894, Houssin was appointed professor of modeling at the National Manufacture of Sèvres, a position he held until his passing in 1919. This object is part of "Scan The World".
