The Eros of Centocelle is a renowned statuary masterpiece embodying the Greek deity Eros, also revered as Cupid or Love. Traditionally linked to the celebrated sculptor Praxiteles, it has evolved into an iconic representation of Hellenistic or Roman artistry. Notably, Praxiteles crafted a large bronze sculpture known as the Eros of Thespiae, which Pliny records was already present in Rome during his time, circa first century AD, and unfortunately, its whereabouts are now unknown. It is likely that this magnificent work sparked numerous Roman replicas during its tenure in Rome, with the Eros of Centocelle serving as a prime example. As the offspring of Aphrodite, Eros is often depicted as a winged youth or a small child, embodying the essence of youthful vitality and passion.
