Eros, the revered god of love, was an ancient deity worshipped by the Greeks with great fervor. In Thespiae, Boeotia's sacred city, Eros' grand sanctuary stood tall, boasting numerous masterful sculptures crafted by Greece's most celebrated artists, including Praxiteles and Lysippus. This iconic work of art, born from Lysippus' skilled hands in the 4th Century BC's latter half, showcases Eros as he effortlessly draws his bowstring. This masterpiece served as a model for its Roman counterpart, crafted during Emperor Augustus' reign. The original Greek piece dates back to 338-335 BC. Eros is depicted here as an adolescent, exuding a youthful softness despite his slightly angular physique. As he pulls the bowstring, his natural posture remains unaltered. Lysippus masterfully crafted a complex spatial arrangement, skillfully positioning various parts of the figure within intersecting planes. This intricate composition imbues the depiction with a unique sense of dynamism.
