Red blood cells or erythrocytes are tiny cells without a nucleus that reside in the bloodstream. They are abundant and make up the main component of blood, accounting for 40% of total blood volume. Primarily composed of hemoglobin (which is why blood appears red), their function is to transport oxygen to various body tissues as well as carry carbon dioxide to the lungs where it can be expelled from the body through breathing.
