Eric Gill's Ecstasy, carved in 1910, underwent a seven-month process. It was owned by Edward Perry Warren, a collector from Lewes, Sussex, who also commissioned Rodin to create "The Kiss". Gill created the relief over that period of time and initially called it "They". After his death, he became known as "Ecstasy". When creating this work, Gill drew inspiration from Indian temple sculptures, which frequently depicted couples in intimate moments. The spiritual significance found in these sculptures influenced Gill's own work, sharing a common theme. He expressed the concept that human acts of creation mirror divine power, stating that all creative endeavors are ultimately guided by God.
