The Windlance is an imposing dwarven contraption crafted by the skilled artisans of Erebor in the Third Age of Middle-earth. This massive device bears resemblance to a gigantic double crossbow situated atop a rotating platform, its design engineered for maximum impact. During the initial confrontation with Smaug, Lord Girion of Dale cleverly equipped the Windlance with black arrows, which he then fired at the dragon from a secure vantage point. Although one of these arrows successfully struck its target, loosening a scale from Smaug's armor, it ultimately proved insufficient to bring about the dragon's downfall, as Girion fell victim to the final black arrow before he could deliver the decisive blow. Upon their return to Middle-earth, the dwarves of Erebor unwittingly awakened Smaug from his slumber, prompting the dragon's brutal assault on the tranquil lake town of Esgaroth and the subsequent destruction of the Windlance. Ultimately, it was Bard, a direct descendant of Girion, who would claim victory over Smaug with the last remaining black arrow.
